When to follow up

Timing matters more than wording.

Most recruiters recommend waiting at least 5–7 business days after applying before following up. Following up too soon can come across as impatient; following up too late may miss the window before a decision is made.

If you have not heard back after 2–3 weeks, one follow-up is reasonable. After that, move on — repeated follow-ups rarely change the outcome and can leave a negative impression.

Best practices

Make your follow-up easy to reply to.

Keep it short. Mention the role you applied for and when. Do not restate your entire resume. Ask a clear question — “Is there any update on my application?” — rather than making an open-ended request.

If you have a contact name, use it. If you applied through a portal and do not have a recruiter email, reply to the confirmation email you received after applying.

One follow-up per application.

Sending multiple follow-up emails for the same application is almost always counterproductive. If you do not hear back after one follow-up, focus your energy on other applications.
